MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION OF N.Z.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. (ler United Press Associ ition WELLINGTON, Juno 24. At a meeting of the executive of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, held to-day, several matters, affecting civic interests were discussed. Regarding municipal elections, the Mayor of Christchurch moved;—“ That, owing to the inconvenience caused by holding so many elections on the day fixed for the bi-annual election of councillors, the law should be amended to provide for some of the elections being held on a different day.’* It was urged against the motion that people were gradually educated up to the present system, and that the only chance to getthe people to the poll for minor bodies was to merge them with the bigger bodies. The motion was lost by six votes to nine. A motion was carried drawing the attention of the Government to the injustice now placed upon local bodies through the regulations which forbid railway employees and civil servants from taking an active part in local body matters.
