CRICKET.

(Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 6. At a meeting of the committee of the Cricket -ssociation, A. J. Austin , and A. F. E. Brittain were appointed delegates to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council on the 26th inst. The chairman mentioned that Auckland had obtained ,£206 from honorary members and pointed out that the Association had no provision for the admission of honorary members. He drafted an addition to rule 2 providing for the admission of such members at an entrance fee of one guinea, also a necessary addition to the rules that there should he provision for two to represent them on the committee if the number of hon. members be not less than 25.

W.C.S. V. “GREAT UNKNOWNS.” In accordance with the usual custom, the season opened with a match between the 'College and “The Great Unknowns,” which was played on the new school grounds. The wicket, which ■ had been covered with matting to protect the new turf, was excellent; the scoring was suf-

ficient earnest of, this. School won, toss, and succeeded in putting on 181 for six wickets. The' unknown quantities followed, Butterworth and Orton opening. Both played good cricket, Butterworth, in particular, giving a finished exhibition’. On reaching 75, he walked out, and allowed himself to be easily stuniped—an alternative to retiring which he has made use of before. The "Unknowns’" score stood at 140 for four wickets when stumps Were drawn. Scores:

BY “STONEWALLER.” After weary weeks of general meetings and all the dry-as-dust preliminaries of a sports season, local devotees of the summer game opened the 1911-12 session with a general net practice on Cook’s Gardens on Saturday last. It was a perfect cricketing day. Three \Vickets—St. Paul’s, Wanganui, and Aramoho—were in use, and each had its quota of players, the juniors being specially well represented. It was pleasing to notice so many hew faces, and it is evident that the coming season will bring into view many lights that hitherto have been languishing in the obscurity of the proverbial bushel. * ' _ . Cricket promises to show an appreciable improvement this season. Cook’s Gardens already give ample evidence of a better playing surface than has been obtained for years past, while most of the clubs—Wanganui and St;. Paul’s in particular—have specially strong memberships, both in the. senior and junior divisions. The Association desires players to note that the rule to the effect that players must wear either properly studdded, heelless, or rubbed-soled boots at practice will he strictly enforced this season. The cricketer who arrives at the nets in everyday footwear shows a disregard for the turf that will he visited upon him in the shape of a rough ground when the matches commence.

It is expected that the fixtures will be drawn up this afternoon (Monday); if so, the will be published on Tuesday. The long-delayed entry of Aramoho into the junior ranks will mban a bye each week, and these, will probably be filled hr with games against E.astown and Castlecliffi. Senior playera will be glad to welcome Aramoho back into the senior division. Owing to the secession of Cosmopolitan, the up-river club has, been considerably strengthened, while the vacant places will be filled by the pick of last year’s juniors. They should turn out a good, even eleven, that-may be relied on to make things interesting for the opposition; Secretaries of clubs are' reminded that to-day is the last day oh which entries for the cup competition, may be recSoivedi
