ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY.

THE OVERSEA DOMINIONS' APPROVAL.

Received July 22, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, July 2.1 Viscount Wolmcr inquired as to the extent whereto the oversea' Dominions had been committed by their approval of the Anglo-Japanese treaty, and whether Japan had been informed of the Dominions' course of action in the event of Britain being involved in war under article 2 of the treaty.

Sir Edward Grey said the action of th« Dominions in the event of war would be a matter for consideration by the Imperial Government in consultation with the Dominions. It was not a matter for di»cussion with any foreign Government.

The following is Article 11, referred to in the above cable:—lf by reason of unprovoked attack or aggressive action, wherever arising, on the part of any other Power or Powers, either contracting party should be involved in war in defence of its territorial rights or special interests mentioned in tho preamble of this agreement, the other contracting party will at once come to the assistance of its ally, and will conduct th© war in common, and make peace in mutual agreement with it.
