UNION BOAT&'G CLUB. The above club wQI bring the season to a close on Saturday afternoon next, when the “Tesla” Fours will be decided. Entries close at 7 o’clock to-night. Refreshments will be provided for members and their friends.

The police are at present engaged in making inquiries into a case of supposed burglary at the upper end of the town. The drunk who was convicted and discharged was fined £l, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, and was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment for using obscene language. A charge of being an incorrigible rogue was preferred against another individual, but it was withdrawn by tho police. On Thursday evening, in Trinity Wesleyan Church, there is to be a musical service of exceptional interest. It will take the form of an organ recital, and will be interspersed by vocal items. Mr C. W. Naylor will preside at the organ. Mr Randall, who is one of his pupils, and irganist at Trinity, will assist. Madame Briggs will sing “Angels Ever Bright and Fair” and “The Worker.” Mr Joll will sing “H la Enough” from “Elijah.” If po.nible, Air Bucidey will be present and give one of hia popular cornet solos. A collection will be taken for church funds.

As Mr \V. T. Jei;:iinga, M.P., was passing through his electorate last week he cane across a couple of settlers who were severely burned in tne recent bush fires. One young man at Awakino was burned -ibout the face and right arm owing to a sudden change in the wind driving the lire right on to him. He had been attended at Awakino, but his injuries Were so bad that last Saturday he had to be orought into tli? New Plymouth Hospital. Another settler south ->f Kawhia had his tegs and hands burnt with such severity as to make it necessary, eventually, for him co have to go out to one of the hospitals in tho Waikat.

Messrs Baldwin and Rayward, whose local representative is Mr J. L. Stevenson, Wickateed Place, report that amongst the many applications for patents they have just filed are:—l. Harrison, Miramar, apparatus for co-.ktng bottles; F. Gough, Hokitika, a new medicine; S. B, Marchant, South Australia, improvements of ridge caps for the roofs of structures of buildings; L. Paget, Auckland, improvements in water heaters for use in connection with internal combustion engines.
