THE YONGALA WRECK.
Press Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright. BPJSBANE, Marcmh 29. There is no further news of the Yongala. Several vessels have returned from unsuccessful searches. There is a lingering hope in some quarters that possibly survivors may be found on adjoining reefs or islands. STEAMER SUPPOSED TO HAVE FOUNDERED. Search for Possible Survivors. Coincidental Escapes. Eeceivcd March 30, 10.10 a.m. BRISBANE, March 30. The steamer Woolbowra takes up the Yongala’s running. Consequent on thq small quantity of wreckage which has come ashore, there is a growing opinion that the Yongala foundered immediately after striking, and sank in deep water with all hands. Two men reported that they heard the blowing of whistles and an explosion off Bowling Green on Friday afternoion. The steamer Grantala was sheltering there at the time, but she heard nor saw. nothing, little importance is attached to the re port. The Government is taking an active part in the search. The Premier has ordered that no expense is to be spared. The finding of a mail bag is acoepted qs strong evidence of foundering. The mail room was below the deck, and the finding of the bag so soon is taken to indicate that the vessel opened out or has broken up. The usual crop of warnings and coincidental escapes associated with wrecks are forthcoming. A number who .should have travelled by the Yongala failed to do : so. An authentic list of those aboard is l not yet available, but enquiries are proceeding. The cargo included <£l2oo worth of sugar and machinery valued at ,£BOO, the property of the Colonial Sugar: Company.
