TERCENTENARY OF THE BIBLE

PULPIT REFERENCES. Frees Association.—Telegraph.-Copyright. Received March 27, 1 p.m. LONDON, March 26. Pulpit reference to the tercentenary of the authorised version was general to-do; Bishop Weldon, at St. Paul’s, said that, looking at the coming years, the near future seemed as if it would be charged with issues of grave moment to the country and the Empire. He prayed to English-speak-ing peoples to be true to the Bible. The commemoration of the tercentenary of the Authorised Version of the Bible was fixed to commence in Britain on the 26th instant. As the actual date of publication has not been discovered, that date was chosen so as, not to interfere with the Coronation festivities. The Canadian ‘celebrations were held in February, and in the United States they will be held in April. The Authorised Version is a revision of the Bishop’s Bible,, begun in 1604 and published in 1611. It, ‘arose out of the conference between the High Church and Low Church parties, which was held by . James I. at Hampton Court in 1604, being originally proposed by Dr. Reynolds, president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, the leader and spokesman of the Low Church party, and subsequently on the committee which revised the translation of the Prophets.
