SHORTAGE OF OPERATIVES.
CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND.
(Per United Press Association.) J AUCKLAND, March 25. The shortage of operatives in the various factories was discussed at a conference, convened by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, between the manufacturers’ committee of the Chamber and representatives of the Auckland Provincial Indus-' trial Association. Mr R. Buttle (president of the. Industrial Association) suggested that rue Government should ascertain, through the various labour bureaus and factory inspectors, the actual position. If satisfied that there was a real need for a small selection, a committee oL factory managers should proceed to England to arrange for the labour required. - . . The Hon. Mr Paul, M.L.C., said he felt sure that the suggestion would not meet with the approval of the trades organisation. He though the better plan would be to arrange for a conference between the federations of employers and employees. If these could agree as to the alleged shortage, then they could confidently approach the Government for relief. The following resolution was Unanimously carried.: —-“That a start be made in the direction advocated by .the Hon. Mr Paul, calling a conference of the Auckland Clothing Manufacturers’ Union with the Tailoresses’ Union, also between the Boot Manufacturers’ Union of Employers arid the Auckland Bootmakers’ Union (operatives), and Wheil agreed upon the position, then to make joint representations to the Government.”
