(Per 'United 'Press Association.) ••-■GISBORNE, March 24. After years of agitation it has been decided to remove the South African troopers’ names from the Captain Cook Memorial, and place them in the band rotunda.
The Borough Council meeting last night lasted until 2.30 a.m. ’ The question of adopting Edison’s storage battery cars for the tramways was further postponed. It was decided to call tenders for sleepers for the tramline. The Mayor said ho expected the electrical gear to be shipped from England in about a month or six weeks. There was a discussion of four hours regarding sewerage works. At 2.15 a.m., when the recreation reserves were being considered, the Mayor vacated the chair, but another chairman was appointed, and a motion to which the Mayor had objected was passed, rescinding the resolution that laying out and drain work be done by contract. The trienniel Maori Synod has finished its sittings at Waioruatatini. Representatives from all parts of the Diocese attended,/and on Sunday 1000 people were present. In the evening a great tribal meeting took place, there being a congregation of 600, while 200 more stood outside. The Bishop of Waiapu delivered a stirring address. On Monday the offerings of each tribe were collected, and ■ amounted to .£742. The Hon. Ngata handed over d 6500 to the bishop for the Hukareki Girls’ School fund (which amount is to be subsidised by Mr J. N. Williams), and £SOO, ■to Archdeacon Williams towards the Manutuke Church fund.
