HON. T. MACKENZIE AT WAIAU

A TRADE REVIEW. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. The Hon T. Mackenzie was welcomed at a large so?ial gathering in Waiau last night. lie said he had. no sympathy with the cry that Ministers were* too much in the country and too little in Wellington. Ministers took their work with them, and he was sure they had the support of the people in visiting the country. After reference to the excellent exhibits at the Waiau Show, Mr Mackenzie said the apple industry was going to be one of the most important in the country, and when markets were found in the Motherland, and the waste lands were brought into use, the apple raising ihdustry would become a valuable asset. He went on to review the meat prospects throughout the world, also speaking very hopefully of the prospects of the wool trade. What the country required was men and money to get the space peopled. Britain had surplus population and capital, and both Australia and New Zealand should have a much larger proportion of that surplus. The time was coming when the burden of the empire would rest more heavily on the Dominion’* shoulders.
