OBITUARY.
MR. ARTHUR BEAUCHAMP. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 28. Mr Arthur Beauchamp, father of Mi Harold Beauchamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, died at Picton at two o’clock this morning. He was an his 83rd year, having been born at Ludgate, London, on October 4th, 1827. He arrived in Sydney from London at the end of 1848. After remaining in Sydney for a short period he proceeded to Victoria,, being attracted thither by the disebvery of gold on the diggings. He carried on business successfully, as a general merchant. When the output of gold commenced to decline he sold out, and migrated to Melbourne, where, in conjunction with one of his brothers, ho founded the firm of Beauchamp Bros., auctioneers. The business still flourishes under the. conduct of two of Mr Beauchamp's nephews and their sons. In 1881 Mr Beauchamp;chartered and loaded the barque Lalla Rookh with general merchandise, and sailed‘with his wife and family to Picton. Arriving at that town, he established himself aa a merchant, and was joined by Jas. Mcßeth and William Welfbrd, both of whom have long since passed away. During his residence in Picton Mr Beauchamp took an active interest in politics. Firstly he was a member of the Provincial Council, and later a’ member of the House of Representatives. Mr Beauchamp, in turn, moved to and carried on business at Westport, Wanganui, Wellington, and Christchurch. In this city lie had as partners A. F. Noble, W. Campbell, and Robert Leary, oth deceased. For the last few years <jf his life Mr Beauchamp and his wife resided at Picton. His family comprised seven sons and one daughter. He is survived by his widow and four sons. -
