DURIETOWN WANTS A SCHOOL.

DEPUTATION TO THE EDUCATION BOARD. A deputation, of which Mr. Coles acted as spokesman, waited on the Education Board last night, for the purpose of drawing attention to the urgent need for a school in Durietown. After presenting a largely signed petition, Air. Coles referred to the mam grounds for the request.

There was a groat objection to the children attending the town schools, as they wore compelled to cross the bridge, always a matter of danger, and had to go a considerable distance through the main thoroughfares of the town. The only other school, that at Mars Hill, was two miles away, and was too small to accommodate even a tenth of the children in Durietown. Wore a school to' >bo established at Durietown, there would be no more than 13 or 14 children attending at Mars Hill, as the parents in tho locality would much prefer sending their children to a higher grade school situated where the proposed Durietown school would be. An excellent level site of about 3 acres area was now under olfer for £6OO. An effort had been made to start a fund for the purpose of purchasing, but So far, only £2O had been raised. Mr. Spurdle said he had attended a meeting in Durietown called to consider the question, and from what he heard there, the request was a perfectly reasonable one. The traffic on the town bridge was very dangerous to young children, and in rough weather, tramping up and down the hill would be a very stiff problem indeed Several other members of the Board spoke in support of the request being granted, and it was finally decided to make application to the Government for an 80 school, and for £SBO to complete the purchase money for a site. The Board promised that it would do everything in its power to further the matter.
