STORMS AT SEA.

STEAMERS HAVE ROUGH TRIPS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON,. April 27. (Evidences of -the .heavy weather on the coast were not wanting when the s.s. Tarawera, the East Coast passenger trader, arrived in port this morning. The familiar red funnel was well marked with the salt water, which had dried in splashes of white. The steamer is from Auckland, where she left last Saturday. Under ordinary conditions she should have reached Wellington yesterday,'but she was delayed by the prevailing, bad ~ weather. Speed had to bo reduced, : otherwise the decks would have been swept cleat of their paraphernalia. The Tarawera has weathered many a storm and her seagoing qualities stood her in good stead. The passage - was uneventful until East Cape was, rounded, when a southerly gale was encountered. The vessel hugged the coast. At Gisborne a heavy sea. was running, preventing communication with the shore, and she pressed on off Portland Island. An unpleasant cross-sea was met, an easterly roll ami southerly billows. Napier was readied at 7 a.in. yesterday. Tho Tarawera took up a position about 100 yards off the landing stage, in expectation that a lighter might come off. After wasting three hours it was decided to come right on to Wellington. Towards evening the weather moderated. Beyond some of the dock cargo becoming awash, there was no mishap. The Flora was observed sheltering under the lee of Cape Kidnappers. .-ne managed to get alongside at Napier, but not for long, and was obliged to return to her shelter. The liner Fifcshire, which left Auckland for Napier before the Tarawera, was not reported. She would probably keep out to sea. Tho Tarawcra’s Napier and Gisborne passengers will tranship to the Victoria which goes north to-morrow.
