Millar found, as a result of inquiries, that New Zealand freight rates and passenger fares, are fifteen to ten per cent, respectively lower than in Australia, while the Dominion paid higher wages to the bulk of its employees. From what he heard in Australia the Commissioners’management did not: succeed in pleasing all ‘ parties any more than Ministerial management. •
HIS IMPRESSIONS OF AUSTRALIA. N.Z. the Best Country. SYDNEY, April 24. The Hon. J, A, Millar is returning by the Moana. He gave a newspaper some of his impressions- o# Australia.' He emphasised the hospitable kindness extended to him -everywhere. Any Atm, he declared, might be proud to live in any of the States he had visited, but he was going back to the best little State of the whole lot. He was sure the people had a higher average level of comfort in New Zealand. The average man could get along better there. He was much struck with the enormous progress made in Australia since he visited it ten years ago. He thought they had a healthier climate in New Zealand and were breeding a better race, and he did not, find the Australians any smarter than the New Zealanders. He thought the latter were, as bright in the head as were Australians. Australia was a great ’country, but he had seen nothing to shake his conviction that the New Zealanders had the best, country to live in. - J
Interviewed at Sydney the Hon. J. A. Millar said:—“l’ve been impressed once more with the size of Australia—a big country, in comparison with New Zealand. Even Australians don’t, quite realise, I think, what their country’s going to be. It’s not a quarter rail-roaded yet, but yon can travel 3500 miles, from Rockhampton to Broken Hill, practically in the same train—a five-day express.
