MOVING MOUNTAIN.
VILLAGERS FLEE FROM THEIR HOMES. The Voirons mountain, 4875 ft. high, in the Savoy Alps, situate near the Lake of Beneva, is threatening the village of Machilly with destruction. The northern face of the mountain is moving downwards towards the village, which lies at ; ts foot. Groat terror exists among the inhabitants of Machilly and those oceupv'n.' houses nearest the moving mass, have* flea from their village from their dwellings, fearing that the avalanche will suddenly increase in force and overwhelm them. The French authorities are trying to .divert the course of-the advancing'landslide from the village towards a "ravine, and all the villagers are assisting. It is thought that a small lake has formed in the Toirons, and that the water is forcing out the side of the mountain. A similar phenomenon occurred in 1892 above St. Gervais-les-Bains, when a large portion of that resort was destroyed by the sudden advance of a portion of a mountain.
