WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council was held yesterday, those present being Crs D. Mason (chairman), W. Neilson, H. M. Speed, J. McGregor, J. R. Somerville, E. E. Fletcher, R. Lilburn and A. C. Mannington.

TOWN BRIDGE.— The chairman reported that he and Cr McGregor had interviewed the Wanganui Borough Council and discussed the matter of the proposed sheathing oi. the town bridge, and were informed that the lattter body intended to carry out the engineer's proposals. SLAUGHTERHOUSES.— An application for a license for a slaughterhouse from H. G. Lawson, Aries Estate, was forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture for approval. G. Watson's (Waipakura) application was referred back to applicant, as same was not in order. .

RENEWALS.— RenewaIs of slaughterhouses licenses were* issued to E. W. Spooner (Rakatapauma) and D. Ledwood (Ngauruketu).

STATE GUARANTEED ADVANCES.— A circular memo in reference to the State Guaranteed Advances Bill now before Parliament was received from the Counties Association. It was resolved that this Council is of opinion that the present borrowing powers relating to County Councils and Road Boards under the Local Bodies Loans Act should be continued, and that the Prime Minister and the district representative in Parliament be notified accordingly.

ROADS. — It was decided to support tho Southland County Council in its action requesting an amendment to the Public Works Act, to give county councils and road boards a discretion as to requiring owners of land subdividing same for sale to gravel the roads or streets in connection with such sub-divisions.

WANGANUI-RAETIHI ROAD— A memo was received from the Mangawhero Road Board in reply to a letter from this Council advising that a petition and request which had been received in connection with portion of the Wanganui-Raetihi Road. The Road Board stated that it had passed the resolution "That in acccordance with this Board's solicitor's opinion the Council has the power in its own hands to deal with the matter as it thinks fit." — A resolution was passed acceding to the request of the petitioners, subject to certain conditions.

RIVER TRUST.— A copy of the annual report of the Wanganui Uiver Trust was received from the Under-Secretary for Lands.

WOOL-CLASSING.— The Technical Department of the Education Board wrote statin S- *•>■»* want «cc« s kaj been the greatest drawback to the success of the wool-classing classes during the present year, and urging that all centres should reserve a sufficiency of fleeces to make the instruction next year of the highest possible value.

MUSEUM.— A grant of <£10 10s was made to the Wanganui Museum. ADJUSTMENT OF ACCOUNTS>-It was reported that the persons appointed had for various reasons failed to make the required adjustment of accounts between the lately-formed Mangamahu Road Board and the Upper Wangaehu Board, of which the former body formed a part. It was resolved that the County Council make the adjustment in accordance with the powers contained in the Road Boards Act. Also that Mr W. S. Short be written to and asked if he will make the necessary adiustment. J J

VALUATION.— The valuation rolls for the special rating districts in the county were received from the Valuation Department. r

FINANCE.— The bank book showed adr balance of £127 2s Bd. Accounts totalling A 34 3s 4d were passed for payment.
