WANGANUI LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETIES' UNION.

Win for Socialists.

The second debate in the contest for the Union's Championship shield for the 1909 seaeon took place in the C.C.C. Schoolroom. This was the only debate of the evening, Baptists and T.Y.M.I. winning by forfeits. The subject for debate was "That the French Revolution was a curse as- Burke paints it and not a blessing as Mclntosh would have it;" and this was affirmed by Koanga, and negatived by Socialists. ■ Mr M. Spurdle acted as chairman, and Mr. G. W. McCaul gave every 6atlfjjtactiqm as judge. Both competing teams are newly affilated clubs to the Union, so the debating was not up to the usual standard.
