EDUCATION TESTS.

RHEUMATISM.

Unduly Severe Questions (Per United Pross Association.) • AUCKLAND, March 31. The matter of examinations for proficiency certificates was again before the Board of Education to-day in the shape of extremely lengthy reports from each of ! the members of the Board's, inspectorial staff. The Thames branch of the Education Institute also forwarded a series of resolutions drawing attention to the "undoubtedly involved nature of some of the arithmetical questions," and to the fact that in future at least two of the sums should be straightforward tests of mechanical accuracy. ■ The branch also protested against the English questions, as they were b,eyond the comprehension of pupils between 12 and 14 years, while candidates had no choice of composition subjects, two out of the three submitted heinsr quite unsuitable. The chairman (Mr C. J. Parr) thought it was .quite clear that the majority of the inspectors were clearly of opinion that some of the papers set by the Department in Wellington were too exacting, and, secondly, that the teaching in some respects was not quite what it -should be, and that the teaching of arithmetic was slackening j in certain schools. It was also clear that ' the inspectors found that promotions from ; one class to another had been made that should not have been made, and when the chldren cante to the real test in the Sixth ; Standard they went down. The Board would be justified in making some finding in this regard. The chairman's suggestion that he should draft a scries of motions for' next meeting was agreed to.
