DEFENCE AMENDMENT BILL.

Under the principal Act, the power to dismiss a volunteer for disobedience or misconduct rests w'th the officer commanding a district, acting on the report of the officer commanding a corps. It is proposed in- the Bill to place this power in the hands of the Council of Defence, acting on the recommendation of the officer commanding a district after due enquiry by him. The power to disrate a noncommissioned officer is to remain as at present, with the officer commanding the district.

Volunteer corps equipments are now admitted duty free, and the Bill prposes the same concession in regard to flquipment for officers of the Defence Forces.

Mr Arnold presented to-day a petition from Margaret Pinker ton, asking ior a compassionate allowance in consideration of the services rendered to the Dominion by her late husband, the Hon. D. Pinkerton, M.L.C. .
