CORRESPONDENCE.
Deserving of Sympathy
TO THE BDITOB.
Sir, — On reading the letter in last evening's "Herald," signed by G. H. Pownall, I was very pleased to see that some steps are to be taken in the way of giving some assistance to the Cavanagh family, as I can confidently recommend it to be a very deserving case. I know that when the late Mr Cavanagh was in the best of health, and, I may say, a very strong and hard-working man, he had a very hard struggle to make ends meet and provide his family with food and clothing. In fact, it is a difficult task for any man who is in steady employment, I am sure, these days, no matter how careful he may be, to keep a large family of young children. 1 am not aware how the family were provided for during Mr Cavanagh '3 long illness. When a man is unable to keep his family, how is a woman going to manage with several small children? I think that any man would shudder at the thought of leaving a family of small children fatherless and dependent upon their mother to provide food for them the best way she can. I hope this deserving case will get the same support as it has been usual for such cases to receive in the past from the Wanganui public, and I will also be pleased to receive donations for the benelit of the Cavanagh family. — I am, etc., F. A. HARKNESS.
