TREATMENT OF HABITUAL INEBRIATES.

AUCKLAND, March 12

At last night's nieeting of the Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation the following resolution, moved by the President (Mr P. J. Nerheny), was carried: — "That this meeting disapproves of the Government's action in committing habitual inebriates to Bell's Island, when tl»© cost; of tlveir maintenance is borne by the taxpayer. This meeting is of opinion that it would be much better if the Government pursued the! policy of utilising the labour of habitual inebriates, on say a State farm or a market garden, as suggested by the Premier, paying such persons a fair and reasonable wage for work done, the balance — after reasonable provision had been made for maintenance — to go to those depending on them for support. ___________
