The peasant population ot 2i millions in the feouth ol France solidly supports the agitation lor legislation against the aduteration of wine. Halt a million flocked to Alontpcllier, where a monster peaceful demonstration wa» held yesterday. Hundreds of special trains brought the people tvoni beyond a radius of "84 miles. The organisers stipulated that those within that distance should walk or ride in carts. Tho bishop placed the cathedral and churches at the organisers.' disposal to accommodate women and children unable to find lodgings. Marcellaine Albert, the leader ot the movement, himself a peasant, enjoined the strictest sobriety on his followers. He emphasized this advice, and protested agaiu.-t the needless presence of ten thousand troops. No intoxicants were bold. Th« peasants carried minature coffins, guilottines. black flags, and banners, bearing inscriptions, "Soldiers, do not forget your brothers who are famishing." They marched in procession through the streets to Montpellier. At a meeting it was resolved that nn-le-s the Government yielded to the demands to-day the payment of taxes be refused. Mayors and members of municipalities in the districts affected would resign, while those refusing to do so would be coerced.
