NEW PLYMOUTH TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

To-day, the lion (I. Tow-Ids opened the New Plymouth Technical School m the presence of a large gathering. The building is of buck, and was •reeled by tbt Taranaki liducaaon .Hoard" out o! a i:27UQ Departmental grant, and the remainder was raised or i-, to be rai&ed from local bodies' contributions. There was a largo assemblage of the general public. Addresses were delivered by the Minister, Chairman of the Education Board, Chairman of the Technical Committee, Mr H. Okey, M.H.R., Mr W. E. Spencer (editor of the "School Journal," and until recently director of technical education here), the Chairman of the High School Board, and the Mayor of New Plymouth. There are already 191 students, exclusive of 70 teachers attending the Saturday classes, aud 60U in the school classes. Mr Fowlds, in his remarks, said that modern educational methods endeavoured to make instruction tit the circumstance* and lite of pupils. New Zealand had lagged behind for some time in this matter, but was now coming up to modern ideas. Ho considered that employers could do much to make the classes of full valu« by offering increases in salary to employees reaching certain stages of -efficiency. The revolution in secondary education, making secondary schools no longer tho preserves of tho wealthy, was costing much money, and, unless the people of tho colony were prepared to make substantial endowments for education th» pinning knite would have to he used.
