(From our own correspondent).— PATEA, March 21. A number of residents went to Hawera this evening to hear the Besses o' th' Barn. It is anticipated that a large number will go to Hawera to-morrow afternoon for the purpose of hearing this wonderful com* oination. Mr C. A. Schauer, Chief Inspector of the Public Health* Department,, was in town to-day on a visit of inspection. The annual general meeting of the-mem-bers of the Patea Rifles was . held' tfter parade on Tuesday evening, when a very large muster was present/ Captain Hamerton presided. After appointment of committees, adoption of balance-sheet, and other routine matters, Capt. Hamerton handed in his resignation ac a member of the corps. •Several members deplored the step taken by their captain and asked him to reconsider the matter. In replying, Capt. Hamerton thanked the members for their very flattering remarks, but regretted that he could not see his way to retain command. He assured the company that it was solely on account of pressure of business matters that he had been compelled to relinquish -his commission. As • slight mark of the respect in which he is held by the company, the captain was made an honorary" 1 life member oT the corps, and presented with V new uniform. Immediately after 'the ~ above resignation was done with the meeting received a setback by being told of 'the resignation «f Col.-Sergt. Carey. Capt. Hamerton said he was very sorry to hear that the colorsergeant had decided to resign his rank, and advised the company to hold the matter over for a while, to give Col.-Sergt. Carey a chance to think over matters. However, the colour-sergeant was not to be changed, and so as ,a_ jljght memento h« ■was presented -with his badge of rank. Tbe meeting then adjourned.
