CHARGE OF SHEEP STEALING.

Sheep Farmer Arrested, (Per United Press AsaociaVonJ. WELLINGTON, October 18. John O'Keefe. a sheep farmer in the Martinborough district, was arrested on warrant in Wellington this morning by Detectives Cassells and Connolly. Subsequently he was brought before Dr McArthur, S.M.. and charged, with having, on the 10th October, atOtaraia, Martinborough, stolen nine sheep, valued at £1 13s, the property of Arthur Martin, a neighbouring station owner. Chief Detective McGrath stated that accused was arrested on a warrant issued at Martinborough, and asked for a remand to Featherston until 26th inst., the understanding being that he could be brought up earlier if it suited counsel and the Court sittings at Featherston. Mr Skerrett, for accused, said he had no objection to the application, but asked for bail. He stated that accused was a man possessed ,of considerable property of great value in the Wairarapa, and suggested that his Worship take accused's own recognisances and^the recognisance of Mr Major, M.H.R., in such sum as his Worship thought proper. Hi 3 Worship remanded accused to appear at Featherston on 26th inst., and allowed bail in self ,£SO and one surety of £50.
