THE COMMONWEALTH.
British Comments on Recent Happenings Press Am relation.— Telegraph.— Copyright. Received October 19, 7.0 a.m. LONDON, October 18. Commenting on the secession movement in West Australia, the Standard states that safety is of much greater interest than prosperity. Sir John Forrest may be expected to exercise a mollifying influence on West Australia, and he is fully alive to the necessities of defence, and that safety is realisable only by means of political union. More population is a necessity for her defence, and ought to be welcomed in Australia as cordially as in Canada. The Times, commenting on Mr Deakin's speech at Ballarat, states that it was of considerable importance. It says, "His description and estimation of Australia reminds us of the conditions here, where there is need for a constructive policy of practical progress of social questions. One of its vital elements will, be such a reconstruction of our economic and fiscal system as will widen the scope of the workers' employment, and yield a revenue necessary for the realisation of reform."
