ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.

On Maori L«as«s (From Our Parliamentary Special). (By Telegraph,). WULLINGTON, October 17. Important amendments to the Govern* ment Advances to Settlers Bill were brought down by Governor's message this afternoon. One provision is an addition to section 18, empowering the office to lend money on the security of land , held under lease from the Maori Land Board, under the provisions of the Act of last year, with a proviso that the Board or person in whom the title may be vested shall join in the mortgage. Another clause provides that where a Maori makes default in the payment of any of the instalments, the Superintendent may, instead of foreclosing and selling the security, lease the same in order to cover the indebtedness to the oitice. This provision should enable the office to make advances to Maoris with more freedom, while the first mentioned is calculated to be an incentive to Maori land owners to place their lands under the Maori Land Boards in the hope of getting a title therefrom to such areas as they may dasire to farm themselves.
