PATEA.

(From our own correspondent.) PATEA, September 19. The Patea Rifles were inspected last evening by Major Malone, of the Taranaki Battalion. The corps was exercised in battalion drill for about two hours, and at the conclusion of the parade the inspecting officer addressed a few words to the members, expressing appreciation at the very efficient state of the corps, and complimenting them on their very smart and tidy appearance. Mr S. Blake has, I understand, purchased Mr J. Hawkeu's splendid farm at Kakaramea.

The sale of work in aid of the funds of St. George's Church was held in the Harmonic Hall to-day, and proved a great success. Proceedings were opened at 2.30 p.m. by his Worship the Mayor (Mr G-. Williams), who, in a very neat speech, outlined the great benefit to an institution these guilds were. The financial result is, I hear, beyond the most sanguine expectations. Mr E. Synies has been elected captain of the newly-formed Polo Club. The club has obtained a suitable paddock on Mr A. Palmer's farm at Whcnuakura, and tho opening day is fixed for Saturday next.
