The damage ie estimated at several millions of dollars. Eight steamers were stranded, and several foundered. There were numerous collisions. The American .vessel S. Hitchcock was cast high and dry on the Kowloom sea wall. By moans of a tug constantly towing her the liner Empress of Japan was saved. The sloop Phocnis and the French destroyer Francisque were wrecked. 1000 Perish at Manilla. Received September 20, 8.57 a.m. LONDON, September 19. Beuter's Manila correspondent states that it is reported that a thousand lives were lost during the typhoon. NSW. COLLIERY TROUBLE. A Concession by the Owners. Pmm Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright Received September 20, 10.0 a.m. SPDNEY, September 19. The colliery owners, .at a meeting, agreed that the night shift should bo abolished, at one n.me from March 31st and at the other from June 30th next. It is understood that the miners will have to decide to-morrow whether they will ac.cept this compromise. On their answer will do pend whether the mines are shut down or whether work will be continued.
