WORK IN MINES.

Requests by Westport Trades 1 Gouncil. Press Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. WELLINGTON, September The Trades and Labour Council of W«-at-port waited on the Minister of Mines urging an amendment in the mining laws. They asked that the "bank to bank" clause be made universal, that the sick and accident fund be consolidated and converted into a national fund for the whole State, that deputy or shift bosses be compelled to pass an examination in gases, that old workings should not be sealed up as the gases accumulate, that no rock drilling machine be permitted unless continually sprayed with water to keep down the dust, that no batteries work on Sunday, that where Sunday work is permitted it be paid for at double rates, that a royalty be imposed on gold for the benefit of the Miners' Sick Fund. The deputation pointed out that a royalty of threepence per ounce would produce =£8000 annually. The Hon. McGowan promised to consider what alterations the Government would be justified in making in the law, but he must hear both sides. If there were Sunday crushing, that was a matter for the police. Personally, he saw no necessity for working overtime.
