An Auckland bankrupt told the D.O.A. that his biggest racing transaction was a bet of .±'2oo. It was his contribution to a syndicate, to back an Australian double at Newmarket Handicap time. The syndicate stood to win £28,000, of which he was to receive ,£7OOO. One horse was first, and the other horse second.

"A Parent" writes us in reference to the paragraph in the headmaster's report of jthe Queen's Park School in which it is stated that no prizes for regular attendance will be given because some of the registers were destroyed by fire. Our correspondent thinks such an omission grossly unfair to those children who have regularly attended school, under promises of reward, often at very great inconvenience to their parents and frequently when through illness they would have been bettor in bed.

The Magistrate's Court was occupied for a considerable time this morning with a case in which A. J. Stewart, builder and contractor, claimed (£24 4s 4d from Daniel Bekker, being the outstanding portion of an account for a house which was erected by plaintiff for defendant. The latter put in a 'counter-claim for JJ2S for work which he alleged was improperly done. The Magistrate, Mr R. L. Stanford, heard the evidence of both parties, and gave judgment in the first case for the plaintiff for £20. and in the counter-claim the judgment also went in favour of Stewart. Mr Gordon appeared for Stewart and Mr Mackay for Bekker.
