CORRESPONDENCE.

Reply to Mr Maclellan.

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, — Kindly allow me a little space to reply to Mr Maclcllan. I was very sorry to- read his frivolous attempt to belittle the young No-hcense people again, especially tha young women. Frivolity is not becoming in a man of his years, especially in dealing with such an important subject. With regard to his old-fashioned notions about young women, lie seems to forget we have changed ttioss bad old days for something far higher and more ennobling for our sex, and it is now generally considered that woman is man's equal, intellectually. Of course, Mr Maclellan dislikes women having the franciii&o because he is afraid of them. Naturally .enough. He knows that they are, more than men, the hope of our future good. The great majority of them .will vote "no. license" in the know ledge — I repeat the word — that in so doing they will help to promote "home happiness and domestic bliss," Mr Maclellan professes to be so anxious for. An. instance of Mr Maclellan's utter prejudice against, and hatred of, no-license is given in his concluding sentence, in which he characterises the reform as a "ridiculous fallacy." Well, we do not claim that Clutha. Ashburton, etc., are enjoying perfect bliss under no license, but we do claim that there is powerful and emphatic testimony in its favour (vide Ashburton Aswers, etc.). I am sorry for Mr Maclellan when I inform him that there are upwards of 850 young men and women belonging to our clubs who, prompted by the highest motives and according to conscience will, strike out the top line next Wednesday. — I am, etc., A YOUNG WOMAN.
