ANNUAL SOCIAL AND DANCE. The Fire Brigade's annual social aud dance is always looked forward to with pleasiirablc anticipation, as it has long been recognised as one of the best mimaged and most enjoyable of the many similar functions held during the dancing season in Wanganui. It is safe to say that the one held last night compared favourably with any of its predecessors, the affair being a most successful and thoroughly enjoyable one. The attendance, as usual, was large, aud thanks to the excellence of the arrangements all who were present spent a very pleasant evening, the firemen sparing no pains to ensure the oujoyjnent of their guests. The Social Committee especially are to be congratulated on the 'able manner in which they had carried out their duties. The decorating of the hall had been tastefully done by them, and the result was very pleasing. Lieutenant Sims apologised to the company at the outset for the absence of Captain Spriggens, who was unfortunately confiued to '■ his bed. Mrs Lockett provided the music, which was first-class, and as the floor was in tip-top order dancing was carried on until an early hour .under the most pleasant conditions. Extras we/c kindly played by Miss Spriggens and Mr Powell. Lieuteuant Sims and Firemen Leathorlauds and Loftus fulfilled the duties of M/sC. in capital style. Mr Thomas Hodson, who supplied the supper, put on an excellent spread, which was done full justice to. Captain Beach, Firemen Austin, McGregor, McGonagle, aud Messrs W. Foster, W. Armstrong; and Mi Brunette contributed songs, -instrumental "items, etc., and added to the general enjoyment. "MY SWEETHEART." The instrumental amateur musicians of Wanganui must be accounted both goodnatured and lovers of the divine art when wo pause and consider how often, their services are demanded and freely given. The Duke of Plazza-Toro's cutting remark in "The Gondoliers," ''Thai's so like a band !" when informed that the absence of his musicians was owing to the fact that they required to be paid in advance, certainly does not hold good in Wanganui, and what with the Orchestral Club, Liedertafel, etc., the marvel is that they find time to fulfil their many engagements. For the production of "My Sweetheart" on Thursday and Friday, the 14th and loth of October next, the local amateurs will have the assistance of an. orchestra of about 25 players under the baton of MrJames Crichton. The songs have all been orchestrated, and in addition tc- accompanying the singers, the orchestra will play a selection each evening. Of late years musical comedy has undoubtedly enjoyed a great measure of popularity, and in staging "My Sweetheart" in such a thorough manner the Wanganui amateurs deserve the hearty support of the public, and we trust to see the Opera House crowded on the dates of the production.

The Forestei^s intend holding their aunual social on Friday, Bth September.

A well-known temperance lecturer is to deliver lectures in the Opera House on next Thursday aud Friday evenings.

The Assembly Rooms have been ongaged by the Defence Cadets for a social* 1 and dance on the sth of September. This will be the last of the scries, and like the previous ones given by this popular company, will be strictly by invitation.
