THE WANGANUI SUBURBS LIGHTING BILL.
(From our Parliamentary Special)' (By Telegraph.)
WELLINGTON, "August 23. The Local Bills Committee to-day had again under consideration, the Wanganui Suburbs Lighting Act Amendment Bill, which had been referred back to it under circumstances reported at length" last week.
As a result of the Committee's deliberations, a new clause, has been inserted in place of clause 2. This new clause defines the lighting area as one mile back from the river, and about three miles along the River Bank.
When the Bill was reported, the Leader of the Opposition referred to a statement that had been made that the Bill had been made a parfcy question by members of the Opposition, and was blocked on that • account: He wanted to contradict that statement. Speaking for himself he objected, not to the. Bill, but to the mode of procedure adopted. He had no objection to the Bill whatever.
Mr Willis said he was pleased to hear Mr Massey's explanation. It certainly did appear strange that the opposition to the Bill came from the other . side of the 1 House. (The Opposition : v 'Nb, no.")TThat was his opinion anyhow. (Laughter.) He himself had never ' stated that this. . had been made a party question. After further discussion, the report of the Local Bills Committee was ordered to lie on the table.
Mr Willis has received a sheaf of telegrams from Wanganui, congratulating him upon his efforts in connection with the Bill and urging him to stick to his guns and see it through. .
