Friends in this city of Lieutenant Haly Garcia have received news of his death by drowning in the Sciende River, Cashmere, India. » Garcia was -the- eldest son of Captain Garcia, for many years a resident here, but- now in England. He was bom in this city, and educated at TJhrist's College and the .Boys' High School. He joined the Imperial Yeomanry, and served in South Africa, where he transferred" to the second New Zealand Contingent, in which "he got his commission. After the war he got a commission ,as lieutenant in the first battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, and was serving with his regiment in India at the time of his death. He was a keen athlete, and in 1898 won the halfmile Amateur Championship of New Zealand.
