AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC

WEST'S PICTURES ™AND THE BRESCIANS. Tho entertainment provided last night by the combination -of; West's Pictures and the Brcsciaus on their fourth appearance in the Opera House had the result of attracting another crowded house. The programme was on the same lines as the previous ones, but every item was fresh, the variety of the pictures being- a strong feature, and also the rapidiy with whichitem followed item.

Ths pictures shown last night opened with a day in a Welsh slate quarry,' th's being an education in slate working to anybody, showing the various stages . in working the slate. This was followed by a view of boats ascending and descending the rapids of Killarney, which was enthusiastically received, as was also that showing salmon spearing in a Canadian river, while some amusing incidents at a baby show were splendid, sending the audience into roars of laughter. The process of converting iron into steel, at a- North of England ironworks, was excellent, and a study in birds, beasts and reptiles at the London. Zoo, was unique and interesting. A pathetic picture was shown of the life of a little London match-seller. Other fine pictures were gathering grapes in a French vineyard, the rescue and funeral of. the victims of the Submarine Al disaster, the Press, illustrated by pictures instead of words, the adventures of a bewitched traveller, a view of the Grand National Steeplechase at Liverpool,, in which the New Zealand horse Moifaa ran unsuccessfully in the colours of the King. Off for Our Holidays, a humorous incident, caused the most hilarious laughter, and the fairy myth of the Sleeping Beauty, in twenty scenes, was very pretty. The concert programme of the Bresciana was quaint and good. Thoy opened with an operatic Fantasia ' from " -Gounod's "Faust," for voices and the orchestra, which served as an excellent introduction to what was to follow. The lullaby "Wee Baby," by a number of voices was good, and also the quartette "Sobbing," which was encored. The vocal niimbers of th« Misses Dorminca and Antonio Martenengo elicited well merited applauce and an en,core, while Miss Adelina Martenengo's violin selection "Will o' the Wispj" appealed so strongly to the audience that a recall was inevitable. Mr Fred Mills supplied the comic element, and his efforts resulted in several extra encores being added to the programme. The programme concluded by , a plantation serenade, "Down South" by* the orchestra. To-night the animated picture of Wan1 ganui, taken from the Fountain on Friday last, will *be shown, and also the March of the Wellington Cadets through WillisStreet, and a panorama of the throng, the representatives of New Zealand as cinematographed by Mr West in Wellington, and a number of others, all new. Anyone who has not yet seen the West's Picture* combination should not miss to-night, as it will be s their last chance during th« present season in Wanganui.

A lecture will be given in the Museum. Hall by Mr J. A. Gilruth, Esq., Chief Veterinary Surgeon, on "Bacteria in Relation to Disease," to-morrow (Wednesday, August 23rd). The lecture will be illustrated by specially prepared diagrams and numerous culture will be exhibited.
