POLICE COMMISSION.

(P«r United Press Association.) TIMARU, July 20. The Police Commission sat here this morning and took the evidence of a sergeant, a detective, and six constables, this being all that was offering. The detective and the constables all said that the system , of control and supervision in Timaru were of the best, the constables never knowing when to expect a visit from the sergeant. The majority of tho witnesses had been stationed in Christchurch, and expressed the opinion that the control there, as at Timaru, left no room for improvement. They had heard rumour of a theft there by Macdonald, but nothing .more. Some witnesses, who had been 6tationed at Oamaru, said there was nothing in Maqdonald's suggestion that thieving .had been going on there. All denied Macdonald's suggestion re thieving by the force" at Timaru. Sergeant Warring said there had been oaly three burglaries in Timaru in the past four years, and in all cases tho offendeie were convicted. At the conclusion of the evidence, Police Commissioner Dinnie made a statement refuting- the suggestions made in several papers that the Commission was appointed because the- Government was. not satisfied with his' statement that the police had got to the bottom of the Dunedin thefts. That statement only applied to Dunedin, , and the Commission had been appointed to enauire into other matters besides the Duuein thefts, and the Police Department had suffered a good "deal from unjustifiable adverse comment.
