Sir, — If anyone is in ,doubt as to the efficacy of cradge work on the river they can walk over and see, a practical illustration of such on the foreshore by Hatrick's slip? During the past two days the flood has deposited along the face of the recently-erected concrete wall a largo quantity of silt, etc., where there was formerly water, and made a good sandy beach, which now reaches along past tho Harbour Board sections down beyond the slip, and forming a beach, so that ere long no one will need to go to dastlecliff for a run on the sand. This, sir, has all been helped by the skids in front of the slip, and which have geen gradually holding the sand or silt, until the old posts of the slip vfted by the s.s. Aotea been entirely covered. This, sir, must deflect tlie current over to the town side and cause a deeper channel to scoxir, which goes to prove that if a trial w-ere made of Field's scheme beneficial results in clearing the main channel would follow. — I am, etc.,
