Slaughterings In 1904,

WELLINGTON, February 4. The figures relating to the number of sheep and lambs killed by the various slaughter-houses and freezing companies of the colony during, 1904 have been supplied to the Department of Industries and Commerqa by. Mr Flichelbaum, general manager for New Zealand of Messrs Oppenheimer and Co., of New York. The number of sheep killed in the South Island was 662, 156, the chief contributors to this number ' being : — Timaru 165,882, Islington 131',680i Belfast £6, 557, Ashburton 77,065. and Wallacetown 44,254. s The total shows a remarkable drop from the. figures in 19Q3, when 1,07,151 sheep were-slaugh-tered. Tlie lambs killed in the South Island number 1,498,593, as against 1,664,535 in 1903. Of this • year's total, Islington contributed 357,440, Timaru 317.849, Belfast 222,981, and Ashburton 212,222. The four Canterbury companies- thus accounted for 73 per cent, of'the total. In the North Island 1, 498,593 sheep were killed, a decrease of 20, 852 on 1903 figures, of which the Gear Meat Company accounted for 371,825, the Wellington Meat Export Company 350,645, Nelson' Bros. (Tomoana) 194.132, Freezing Works, Gisborne, 156,241 and Nelson Bros. (Gisborne) 126,297, being next. In this island, 629,304 lambs •were killed, the leading figur2S being the Wellington Meat Export Company 176,568, the Gear Company 139,457, and Nelson Bros. (Tomoana) ' 91,075.' Lambs show a decrease of 84,676 for the whole island. The total sheep killed for tlie whole colony is' 2,160,749, and lambs 2,103,567, being decreases of. 579,937, and 403,567, respec-, tively,' when compared with the totals for 1903. ' ' '
