Consternation in Johannesburg
Press Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. Received January 29, 10.30 p.m. CAPETOWN, January 29. Consternation preA'ails in Johannesburg at the prospect ~of British Parliamentary discussion of the Chinese ordinance. The principle involved creates ai fear of disapproval, irrespective of the merits of the measure. There is strong objection to the idea that a colonial Act should be subjected to Parliamentary revision. LONDON, January 29. The Times, commenting on the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton's cablegram to Mr Seddon, applauds his wisdom in following the salutary rule of the leaat interference, and considers that the Chinese ordinance bears very evident , signs that influence was exerted by the consideration of the objections forcibly urged by Mr Seddon.
