THE RHODES' SCHOLARSHIP.

(Per United Press Association.) WELINGTON, 'September 4. The conference of educational representatives with Dr Parkin,, representing the trustees of the Bhodes scholarships, opened at the Museum Buildings yesterday.,, Sir Bbbert Stout, cha'ncellbr of the New Zealand University, was created, chairman,' and expressed regret that professional boards were not represented on the conference. Dr Parkin explained that the. chief points upon which the Rhodes trustees wanted advice were the method of selecting scholars and the body to be entrusted with the selection, age limits of candidates, school or collegiate - standing' of candidates ' the length of residence in the colony before a candidate could apply for a scholarship, the possibility q{ closely adhering to the suggestion of Mr Bhodes in the selection of scholars, and the course of study at ' Oxford which should be recommended to Bhodes' scholars.' . Dr Parkin addressed a conference in the. evening regarding the, Bhodes scholarship!' and allied matters. He had found in every country differences of conditions 'and circumstances, which influenced judgments ou some points raised in regard •' to the allocation of scholarships. The trustees under Mr 1 Bhodes' will desired to be guided as much as possible by local conditions in putting the scheme into operation, although it was of course desired to as far as possible make the scholarships adhere to tht common form. Beplying to a question, Dr Parkin said he thought- the examination papers would be set at Oxford and sent out to the countries. mentioned in the bequest. It seemed to be. necessary that responsiouh examinations should, be setjis a preliminary test. If Greek were decided on it would have to 'be taken. It was the wish of the. trustees ithat scholars chosen' from each ..country should have the entire confidence ' of the community. The Board of Selection would have to be free from political influence of any kind. So far as age' was concerned,- he thought a scholar should not be less than nineteen.
