RAILWAY DEVIATION LINE.
THROUGH INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL ESTATE AND CORPORATION RESERVES.
For some time pa9t ihe Itailway Department have contemplated the removal of the lino down Churton Street to 10110 of an easier curve, and the matter is ftow finally settled. The delation starts frnm a. point, gay, 200 or 300 yards abovo Mr W. G. Ba&33lfa timber ;yards through a portion of the Industrial School Estate, from tbenco through tho Town Belt, conimoneiug fiom a point at the junction of a pieco of land known as Siniley's, paddock, namely, the corner of Asylum Eoad and Ingestre Street; from {hence passing through tho said blork," and continuing across the Cemetery Hoad at the back of the Gaol reserve, effecting a junction at Murray's moulding shop fronting Taupo Quay. This necessitates the Eailway Departmtnt taking three acres from the Borough reserves; consequently, tho Department will be expected to make some concession. Alternative proposals are being suggested an to tho Department conceding boine "f their property to repay the Borough some portion of their losa. The portion suggested in exchango is that of tho .Gaol reserve, which nows consists of an area of ten acres, or an exchange of the whole of tho Gaol reserve for those of Blocks 17 and 20. It is understood that the authorities consider a now gaol will have to be shortly erected, owing to its obsoleteness, and owing also to the strong probability of its being built all round, through tho Borough reserves being cut up, and leased and built upon; therefore, the exchange would be beneficial to one and all conoerncd. Instructions have been given by the Borough Council to their surveyor to at once submit a bketch plan showing how the reserves may be cut up into various sizes.
