THE COMMANDS OF THE CONTINGENTS.
MAJOR JOWSEY ASKED TO EETURN TO THE COLONY. CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. The Premier was interviewed to-niglit by a representative of the Lyttelton Times with respect to the position of the cdmmands of the New Zealand Contingente in South Africa. He said that he had received a communication to the effect that Major Davis, who had beeu appointed to command the Fifth Contingent, had reached Buluwayo, and so far as ho knew was now with his men. The Government had received official information as to some unpleasantness having f.riseu owing to Majoi Jowsey having claimed seniority. .There had, however, been a distinct understanding with him, as with Majors Cradock and Francis, that none of them were to take seniority over Major Robin. General Carrington had communicated with the Government that ho had decided to amalgamate the Fourth and Fifth Contingents and promote Francis to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. The only trouble the Government had had so far had been in connection with. Major Jowsey, and as he had left his Contingent and joined the Artillery, there was no necessity for his remaining in South Africa, and he had, therefore, been asked to return.
