A TRIBUTE TO WANGANUI.

Tho following appears in the Cape Times of Decombor 13th: — His Excellenoy, in cabling to the Secretary of State, haa gratefully ■ recognised the pioiuptitude and liberality of iho response to his call made by the Lord Mayors of Great Britain. London, of course, led the way, but Liverpool, Bir- ' luingliam, Leeds, Manchester, and Bristol, contributed handsomely. Scotland was not behind hand, both Glasgow and Edinburgh sending noble sums, nor did Ireland fail us, as the Lord Mayor of Belfast can testify. Mention should also be made of far-away Wanganui, in New Zealand, the Mayor of which has continued, again and again, to contribute tho offerings of his citizens. The solidarity of the Empire Must strike most of us as genuine when such an outpost aa W»nganui claims to be allowed to aid rofugees in South Africa. Sir. Alfred Milner's decision to distribute the funda as his command, as far as possible through the municipal bodies of tha country, appears to us a wise one. The amount was raised through Mayoral action, and is being fittingly spent un- , der Mayoral control. It is only in I;na Transvaal that any hostility to municipal government is exhibited. We sent five instalments totalling some .£SOO.
