ATTACK ON BOERS' MAIN POSITION.
THE ENEMY DRIVEN BACK. THEIR ARTILLERY FIRE SILENCED. THEY EVACUATE PORTIONS OF THEIR POSITIONS. Rocoived January 22, 11.20 p.m. DURBAN, January 22. Tho turning of the naain Boer position has successfully begun. The enemy's extreme right, oast of Acton Homes, ha» boon occupied, also a ridge four miles north-west of Trickhart's Drift. Worren, with the principal column, and Cleary, operated on Saturday, near where tho Oliverstock-Ladysmith road crosses Vonterspruit. During- Warren's turning- movements, tho Boers on the western slopeß of Spionkop engaged his right and rear. Warren drove them tS 1 higher crests, tho defences of which aro semi-circular, consisting of stone sangars. Tho York and Lancaster Regiments and Lancashire Fusiliers, advancing on the loft along tho unoven spurs, entered the semi-circle under a heavy fire from three directions, taking advantage of all tho available cover. They camo within 600 yards of the enemy's right wing. The masked batteries of the British periodically silenced the enemy's intermittent artillery fire. During the night the Boors evacuated portions of their right wing positions.
