THE SECOND CONTINGENT.
THE IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT RECOGNISES NEW ZEALAND'S LOYALTY. WELLINGTON, January 22. The Governor has sent tho following cable to the Right Hon. Joseph Chamberlain:— "The New Zealand second contingent sailed to-day for South Africa. Very great loyalty and enthusiasm prevailed."' The Premier has received the following reply — 'Her Majesty's Government learns with much pleasure of the departure of tho second contingent, nnd the loyalty and enthusiasm shown by Now Zealand." • Bugler Grimston, who waa taken on at the last moment and had to go aboard in ordinary -uniform, vas presented on the gangway of the steamer with a purse of sovereigns by his comrades. Several newspaper correspondents are passengers by the troopship. The New Zealand Express Company, which haa undertaken to send parcels to tho first contingent free of charge, collected no less than four tons of presents aud sont them by the. Waiwera.
