VICTORIA v REGINA.

(St. John's Hill.) Truly groat are the uncertaintiee of cricket! The Victorias, on tho second day of the match, were without the services of Watt, Hunsley, Parkea (who 1 has left Wanganui and will be greatly missed both by his club and the Association), and the two Bells, and Saunders vrae partly incapacitated by a strained side ; yet though 6 runs behind in the first innings, they managed to snatch a victory by 15 runs. This result is no doubt almost entirely due to the fine bowling of Meldrum; 8 wickets for 19 runs, of which 6 were taken in 8 balls, is a performance to bo proud of. Gordon and Saunders continued the Victoria's innings, but the third ball from H. B. Cave proved too good for the latter, and the next ball secured the new-coiner, McKenzie. Currio was next, and opened very steadily, waiting for Gordon to Bcore, but he, after hitting H. B. out of tho ground for 5, was caught in trying to repeat tho dose. Hole was next, but the first ball from W. B. proved too muoh for the old veteran. D'Arcy was the new-comer, and the two left-handers made things a bit lively, D'Arcy getting W. B. twice away to leg for 4, while Currie cut three from H. B. to the boundary. D'Arcy, however, was caught off W. B. Cavo, and leb in Eastwood; Currio got away another to the boundary with a square cut from 11. 8., and secured a single, but was then tempted to hit at a good one from H. 8., which secured his rftump. The retiring batsman played a good steady innings at a critical moment, which was of great service to his side. , Eastwood was secured by Gillies' first ball, leaving 1 Pownall not out. H. B. Cave (4 for 19) bowled best for his side, and kept a good length all through. It will bo obsorved that the Victorias batted 11 men; nnd though, the substitutes did not add a single run, great credit must be allowed the Reginas for their sportsmanlike action in allowing 'them to bat. H. B. Cave and W. B. Cave opened tho Regina innings to Meldrum and Saunders, and got each bowlor away for fours, but W. B. Cave gave coverpoint a nice catch. Francis was next, but put his leg in front of oiip from Saunders, making- room for Bartlett; he, after scoring a couple of fours, by nice late cuts, was taken by Hole at point, off Meldrum. And then ensued a most extraordinary rot. In Meldrum's nest eight balls ho secured no less than 6 wickets without a single run being scored off him; Wilson, Naylor, F. Parkes and Gillies being taken off successive balls; this disaster let in the last man, H. Boil, who got the demon away for a single, and then a 4 to leg, but succumbed to Saundere; the total of the innings only reaching 45, or 15 behind the Victorio3. The only batsman to show any form was H. B. Cave, who oarried his bat all through the innings. For the first time this season he struck his truo form, and gave a really nice exhibition <5f batting.
