W.C.T. UNION.
WANGANUI BRANCH. Tho W.C.T.U. held their first meeting for 1900 on Friday, January sth, in the Presbyterian Class-room. All the officers of the past year have been le-elcc-ted, and the president, Mrs G. 11. Smith, appointed delegate to the con- 1 vention whicii is to be held in Auckland during February. A meeting was also hold yesterday at the residence of Mrs G. H. Smith to celebrate tho anniversary of the Girls' Sowing Clasa, which is conducted by members o£ tho W.C.T.U., and meets every Saturday afternoon in the Presbyterian Class-room. Games on the lawn, initiated by Mrs Smith and her daughters, were entered into with spirit by tho children, while members of the Union sat comfortably under the trees and watched the» children's enjoyment. The afternoon being perfect, tables were laid beneath the trees, and old and young alike enjoyed the good things provided by members. After the tea was disposed of, attendance prizes wore presented to the children by Mrs W. G. Bassett, who appropriately addressed each recipient. Then., in a short eulogistic speech, the same lady presented to Miss Tucker (the Union's secretary) a very nice dressingcase, which had been subscribed to by members of the W.C.T.U. Miss Tucker has proved a most reliable, hard-working secretary during the four years since the establishment of the Wanganui branch of the Union, and by her gentle earnestness ias endeared herself to her fellow workers, who one and all felt a real pleasure in the presentation. This being the first gathering of tho kind held in Wanganui, all present expressed a hope, that it should bo an annual fixture, and also gave voice to their appreciation of the president's kindness in giving the members an opportunity for spending such a pleasant afternoon.
