BRITISH ADVANCING.
GENERALS LYTTELTON AND WARREN DRIVING THE BOERS AWAY. A PONTOON BRIDGE THROWN ACROSS THE TUGELA. IHE TROOPS IN HIGH SPIRITS. Received January 19, 2.30 a.m. DURBAN, Januaiy 18. Dundonald commands only a small force. After crossing the Tugola, he spent two days in sniping operations against the enemy, awaiting General Lytteltcn's arrival. Lyttelton's troops waded and were ferried across Pietgieter's Dnft, occupying kopjes in the vicinity. The Howitzers and naval guns on Mount Alice, near Zwartskop, effectively shelled the strong Boer entrenchments, and the Artillery covered General Warren's crossing. The enemy fled after some desultory firing. A pontoon bridge was subsequently thrown across the Tugela. General Warren is advancing towards Spinkop and Dewdrop. A telegraph line has been erected to keep up communication. He reports that the troops are in high spirits.
