A NARROW ESCAPE.
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 15. At Tnakaii ferry, in liis punt, Mr Ballard, a settler, had a narrow escapo from being killed owin<!r to a sandbank formed in tho Waikato. The crossing shifts as tho river rises, and tho Waikato has risen tlirough the rains jiißt above the upproachea, making the boarding of the punt with horses dangerous. Mr Ballard's horso rolled over on his back, precipitating Mr Ballard heavily on the i?eck, aud then both fell into the river. Ha was kicked by the hoisc iv the water, but ultimately rescued.
