CUSTOMS RETURNS.

The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council was held at the County offices, Taylorville, this morning. Present — Crs A. Higgie (chairman), Johu McGregor, W. Howie, D. G. Poison, J. Wilson, R/ Neilson, A. N. Georgetti, and D. Boss. (An apology was received from Cr E.E. Fletcher.— Or Wilson reported that, in company with Mr A. Georgetti, he had inspected Shakespeare's Cliff, but in his opinion the Council could do nothing to prevent the soil sliding down to the road. It was decided to hold the matter over for the present. — Respecting the petition of the ratepayers praying the Council to improve the No. 2 Line Extension "road between Kauangaroa and the Maugawhero Bridge (which was read at tho Council's last meeting), a motion was passed to the effect that it be referred to the respective Road Boards wherein the road lies, asking them to put the road in order.— Cr Poison moved that Mr Caddy's application be granted. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder,— The Council adjourned till 8 o'clook,

Mr W. P. Stuart, of the Newmarket Hotel, has donated £2 towards the Licensed Victuallers' Handicap in connection with the Board of Control's sports on Cook's Gardens on Easter Monday.

It is stated that Mr Stevenson, the foreman locomotive driver, stationed at Palmerston, is about to be promoted to Napier, where he has been doing temporary relieving duty

The following Justices of the Peace attended at the Court this morning toreviee the jury list: — Messrs A. J. Parsons, G. S. Bridge, Jas. Laird, aiui John Morgan. Only one person attended to object to his name being on the list. The objection was sustained, and the list then proved.

At the inquest concerning the death of tho infant Charles Morac, at Hastings, Dr Nairn in his evidence (according to the H.B. Herald) stated there was a small perforation of the bowel immediately beyond the stomach . There was also a small rear on the front of the right shoulder, which might have been due to the same substance, but could not say definitely. Could not say what substance caused the perforation, bat this woukl be for further consideration. The condition of the stomach might be caused by a strong alkali or a strong acid. The3e would be corrosive poisons. The poison was far too strong to be caused by anything proceeding from the tins in which the food was packed. The condition of the stomach was caused by something introduced immediately prior to death. The poison must have been given to the baby. The jury returned a verdiot that " Deceased had died by corrosive poison, but by whom anministerea there was no evidence to show." A-i the outcome of the inquest. Harry Tyson ana his wife (nee Moran), have been ai rested. The child was one of the twins, and the second has since died, as reported.
